Description

MYCON spearheaded the construction of IESI Corporation’s groundbreaking Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in McKinney, Texas, marking a significant milestone as the first privately funded single-stream recycling facility in North America to achieve USGBC’s esteemed LEED Gold status. This 28,000 SF facility revolutionized recycling by annually processing over 144 million pounds of non-hazardous materials in an environmentally conscious manner.

MYCON’s involvement ensured the incorporation of sustainable design elements to achieve LEED Gold certification. The facility embraced certified wood, building materials with recycled content, low-emitting materials, and water-conserving fixtures, showcasing a commitment to environmental stewardship. The facility’s single-stream process revolutionized recycling for customers. It allowed the seamless collection of diverse recyclables—paper, glass, metals, cardboard, and plastics—into a single large container, simplifying the recycling process and encouraging participation. Beyond recycling operations, the IESI McKinney MRF was strategically designed to enhance community engagement. It included a second-floor community room and observation deck, offering visitors a unique vantage point to observe and understand the recycling operation, incorporating features to mitigate the heat-island effect, further showcasing MYCON’s commitment to sustainability. These measures aimed to reduce the facility’s impact on the local environment, contributing to a more eco-friendly operation.

Achieving LEED Gold certification marked a significant milestone in environmentally responsible construction for IESI Corporation and MYCON, setting a benchmark for future recycling facilities and reinforcing their commitment to sustainability. Including the observation deck and community room enhanced public awareness and education regarding recycling processes, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility within the community.

MYCON’s collaboration with IESI Corporation resulted in successfully constructing a LEED Gold-certified Material Recovery Facility in McKinney, Texas.
